Walking into the Garvery Center Friday night 20 minutes before the play Tartuffe began in Judd Theater, no one knew what exactly to expect. One of the things that amazed many people was how many people would be there and the line people had to wait in before obtaining the tickets. As audience members made their way through the line and into the Judd Theater, the amount of seats that were already filled was somewhat surprising. 

Within the first few moments of the play starting, freshman Tom Cotter, automatically identified a classmate of ours, Adam Everson, playing Damis, but that did not help the openin scene become more entertaining. About 20 minutes into it, people in the audience were so lost and were looking to other audience members for guidance. 

"I was so lost for about the first hour of this play and definitely waiting for it to pick up," said Cotter. Within the first 40 minutes, the character Tartuffe had yet to appear so that suspense didn't sit well. 

A form of conflict arises 20 minutes into this play with Orgon wanting to give his daughter Mariane to Tartuffe for marriage. Rachel Miller's character Dorine was a breath of fresh air within these confusing, dull characters.

"I found that there was ony one real funny scene throughout the whole play. During the whole play there was an usher who was cracking up the entire time, so I kind of felt out of the loop like I didn't get all the puns or tone of how words were delievered or anything," said freshman Kirby Killen. 

Tartuffe tried to get Elmire to kiss him to show her love to him, but in reality she did not have any love for him. She just wanted to show Orgon that Tartuffe is a fraud because he was saying that he could do anything and that Orgon could lead Tartuffe by the nose. This point in the play shows that Orgon is an imposter.

Toward the end, Damis runs into the house saying that Tartuffe has gone to the judge and gave him convicting papers that Orgon was holding for a friend, and the judge ordered police to arrest him. The policeman makes it seem like he is coming for Orgon, but he is really there to arrest Tartuffe. This everlasting play ends with Orgon realizes that Mariane should be with Valere and gives her to Valere to be his wife. 

Like everything entertainment related, this play had a slow start and better finish. 

"I think they talked it up too much because it was supposed to be hilarious and that you should "bring a box of Kleenex," said Christal Talamantes. 

Overall potentially it would be fine to go see this again if it were done by professionals because it felt like a lot of the speaking was either misunderstood or misheard because of the way it was set up and because of the lack of real accents and lack of experience in the actors. 

Review: Race to Witch Mountain

The movie, Rave to Witch Mountain, I found myself being really excited about when it first came out but once it was out in the theatres and other movies were out that I wanted to see more, this movie took a backseat. But after a decision was made, not mine, my best friend and I were sitting in the theatre waiting to see this Saturday night. I've always been a fan of the Rock Dwayne Johnson, not only was my God brother obsessed with him as I was growing up but he always makes really good movies so once I was actually there and the movie started I was more excited. This movie took a very different turn than I thought it would. It was really good and left me content for the rest of the night. I felt like there were parts that I predicted in my head and that I knew exactly what the actors were going to say but maybe that's a Disney movie for me. I do feel like it could have gotten started earlier than it had but it still had some good parts and I enjoyed myself. I thought the young actors, AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig, didn't disappoint and did a very good job seeming to be different than an average kid their age. AnnaSophia Robb didn't disappoint me as she had in Bridge to Terabithia so overall with the performances given by the actors, the plot and the action I felt like this movie was a good.

Review: Hannah Montana: The movie

Four words. This movie was amazing. When this movie first started being shown in trailers and what not I wasn't really interested in seeing it but as the time for it to come out approached, I found myself being really excited to see this movie and not only being really excited but also wanting to see it right away on opening weekend. I am not a follower of the Hannah Montana tv show but I will say that Miley Cyrus' music is very catchy. I wasn't able to see this movie the first day it came out and had to wait until Easter Sunday to see it but it was definitely worth the wait. Going into the theatre I wasn't quite sure what to expect especially since my best friend Curry had seen it opening day and told me I would need to bring kleenex because she cried like four times. Within the first few moments of walking in and having the previews play one of my best friends Tara and I knew that this movie was definitely not made for our age group at all but that didn't dabber our excitement. The songs in this movie didn't seem to be overwhelming like it would in a musical but had me wanting to download the songs afterwards. The story line was very good and touching and made you be able to relate to and the actors did a really good job making their characters believable. Also, I liked the drama within the two characters, Miley Stewart and Hannah Montana. I also really liked the cameo Taylor Swift played in this movie. Overall I found myself recommending Hannah Montana: the Movie to others.

Movie Review: The Knowing

My weekend in Dallas was interesting to say the least, it had many crazy unpredictable parts and seeing this movie was one of them. My friend Tara and I officially wanted to see Hannah Montana the movie but since we went with two guy friends of ours they didn't want to and they ended up making us go see The Knowing instead. Since it was the last showing and we had to be convinced to see this movie, we missed the first few minutes and I already knew it was going to be a little creepy but didn't really care to hear about the trailers and what not so didn't know what was going on beforehand. I knew that this movie starred Nicolas Cage and I personally am not his biggest fan. I feel like he plays the same roles over and over and always knows too much in the roles he plays, than he should. Anyway so this movie had a good idea and wasn't as creepy as I thought but it still was creepy for me, a girl that does not like watching scary movies at all. The special effects and features on this movie was well worth watching it. But I feel like the trailer showed potentially too much and the directions, producers and actors all acted up the movie. It was decent but I definitely wouldn't go see this again and wouldn't have saw it in the first place had I not been forced to.

Review: The Beauty & The Beast

The Beauty & The Beast is hands down my absolute favorite movie ever. Not only is this movie the best Disney movie of all time but also it's got a great message and sets out to be better than any Disney movie and does. Even still today with all the Disney movies out and that will, this movie is still amazing and has an appeal to people now-a-days. For my sweet sixteen, when thinking of a theme of what my party should all revolved around the first and only thing that came to mind was The Beauty & the Beast. Not only is the main character Belle, independent, smart and caring but she is able to relate to young girls and everyone who watches this movie. She is not a princess or a girl stuck in sleep that has to be kissed by her 'true love'. This movie shows a beast go from a messy, dirty fool to being a nice charming man that has proper manners and become a good young gentleman. Not only is this movie entertaining but it's also really good for young children and young ladies to know that a true gentleman should change his bad ways for you. Belle goes against the current and forms her own individuality and in the end finds her own happiness and is better because she did such a thing. Belle also teaches young ladies and children that reading is a good thing, Belle is constantly reading and talking about her books and just really gives those who need someone to look up to, a great role model even though she is ficitonal and a character. This movie gets better and better every time I watch it.

Review: Sunshine Cleaning

Sunshine Cleaning was filmed in 2007 in New Mexico and starred Emily Blunt and Amy Adams but wasn't released until a few weeks ago. Emily Blunt, in my opinion, is brilliant. The only other movie I have seen her in was The Devil Wears Prada and comparing her performance in both movies is just..mindblowing. In Sunshine Cleaning, she plays a complete opposite of her Devil Wears Prada character and even loses her British accent. Amy Adams, on the other hand, had never really stood out to me..that is until this movie. This movie showed what an amazing actress she is. This movie was one of the few that I was genuiely excited to see and didn't disappoint at all. I found that this movie took everything that I thought it would be and made it twenty times better. The cast in this movie, as I have already mentioned, was perfect. It was definitely a movie worth the 18 dollars at AMC Quails Spring theater and the search for a theater close by that was showing this movie. Thanks to this movie I will be paying more attention to both Amy Adams and Emily Blunt's careers. I left the theater feeling very content with this movies plot and end and also wasn't let down by the excitement I had built up about it since I first saw the trailer. Normally I don't like indie movies but this movie went above and beyond.

Review: Seven Pounds

Seven Pounds summed up in one word is depressing. My best friend and I were intrigued with this movie ever since it came back and trailers were shown because we only had an idea of what it was about and were not sure what was really going to happen. The plot to this movie was very good but just all together the movie could have taken a different turn than it did. Will Smith's character that calls himself Ben has caused an accident that killed seven different people including his fiancee so he spends the rest of his life trying to find seven deserving people to help get out of certain positions whether it be an abusive relationship, an illness or just a bad place in their life. Ben feels as if he can change the outcome of the previous wreck by helping these people but feels like he himself does not deserve redemption when in reality he could have just realized he was able to be redeemed. The twists and turns in this movie I can honestly say I did not see coming at all, this was one of the few movies my best friend even just went along for the ride with. The movie leaves you feeling depressed because the main character you so nicely have come to like decides to kill himself in probably the movie unique way I have ever seen or heard about but also has a way of making you continue thinking about this movie long after you have seen it.

Review: The day the Earth stood still

Over Spring Break, I was home and was hanging out with some friends of mine whom wanted to watch a movie so since I was home for break and didn't really care I let them pick the movie and they picked the 2008 remake of The day the Earth stood still with Keanu Reeves. Usually I really like Keanu Reeves because I find him to be a really good actor and find that he can play many different parts and be believable in all of them. Anyway, I had no idea what this movie was about coming into it but figured I'd give it a chance. It was a mix between crazy and cool. A few times I found myself getting lost and confused many times during this movie even though I played very close attention. I noticed that Jaden Smith was in this movie and found myself really disliking his character and thought his performance was very annoying and could have been played by anyone but he was probably just picked because his mom knows Keanu. But besides that I thought this movie was interesting but probably not a movie I would ever see again because even though I like Keanu I would have to say this movie was not on my list of his favorite appearances even though I thought he did a very good acting job. I just felt like the plot, story and end all had problems with them that did not keep me content with this movie. I felt like the end totally killed it as well. I wouldn't recommend this movie to others and don't think it fit the 'hype' it got when it was talked about. As said by another blogger, this movie shouldn't have ever been a remake.

Review: Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal

This movie was a lifetime channel movie and being a female I do like watching lifetime movies and try to make sure I am home for them but this movie didn't really catch my eye. I didn't want to see it because I felt it gave cheerleaders a bad rep and being a cheerleader since the age of two I didn't appreciate that but one night it was showing on demand so I decided to watch it and give it the benefit of the doubt because I had done some research on the plot and was curious as to what all was going down. The Texas Cheerleading Scandal movie was actually really good, I appreciated watching and it had really nothing to do with being a cheerleader. I would recommend this movie to anyone and not just to my lady friends because I appreciated it and thought the acting was good even though a lot of these actresses I had never seen before. I found this movie to be really good especially for being a lifetime movie and would choose to watch it anyday. 

Review: Meet the Robinsons

From the first day I saw this movie, I was somewhat hooked. Though this movie came out in 2007, I never met anyone who liked this movie as much as I do or who even thought this was a good movie. The target demographic for this movie was younger teens, the average soccer mom, families and children and even though I am none of those I found this movie entertaining and I do every time I watch it. Meet the Robinsons' characters are so diverse and yet are able to touch your heart and make them memorable. 

Review: Swing Vote

I decided to wait for this movie to come out on DVD because I wasn't sure if it would be good enough to spend money on to go see at a theater. This movie caught me by surprise. Maybe I didn't get the full information about the main characters and what not but I was fairly surprised about the plot, if you will say. Moments into this movie, I was excited because it was set in Texico, New Mexico. My best friend Christal is from New Mexico and her boyfriend and also one of my best friend's is name is Tex and it was just crazy that it was Texico, New Mexico. We even did some research on it and realized it was a real place. This movie was moving. At first I just wanted to see it because I love Paula Patton's work and liked that she was playing a broadcast journalist because that is definitely where I want to go into career wise but after watching it, I was intrigued by Molly's (Madeline Carroll) performance as Bud Johnson's (Kevin Coster) very intelligent mature daughter and I was also really impressed by Kevin Coster's performance as well. You really saw a change in his character throughout the movie. I felt like the end of this movie wasn't the greatest because you never really find out the question you ask yourself throughout the movie but for the most part this movie was good and I liked it a lot. It wasn't all about politics and didn't try to make a reference to our current President situation but it found a path of it's own. Swing Vote was a great movie that kept my attention even at four in the morning.

Review: The Women

Coming into seeing The Women I did not realize it was a play beforehand or even a remake of another movie. The main reason I wanted to see this movie was because Eva Mendes is in it and I love her. I was a little disappointed to realize that even a half hour into the movie Eva Mendes still has yet to be shown. This movie was definitely not what I was expecting but I liked it. I felt like the situations the group of women got themselves into was real and things that people I am friends with or that I could potentially get into myself. I did however think some of the way the ladies handled some things was a tad much but after all it is a movie. I thought the cast and acting in this movie was really well and even though a man was not shown once I didn't miss them. With this all star cast made up of Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Jada Pinkett Smith, Deborah Messing, Debi Mazar and Annette Benning there was no possible way these ladies could have gone wrong. I'd give this movie a five out of five and have also recommended it to many of my lady friends.

Review: No Reservations

Being in college a lot of what I do is watch movies. My friends and I find that we watch at least one movie per week. Through this we have found ourselves sharing movies we each individually liked with ones that the other have not seen. One of the movies we randomly ended up watching the other night was 2007's No Reservations starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart. I had seen this movie whereas my best friend Christal had not. I found this movie to be refreshing and cute. I thought Catherine Zeta-Jones' acting was perfect and made the movie. The first time I viewed this movie I did not see any of the plot conflicts, actions, etc coming at all. Going through other reviews for this movie I realized that they were all food related which I thought was very cheesy to be talking about a food movie. The food in this movie wasn't the full subject and what everything was surrounded around, it was a symbol and kind of a way of getting all the characters brought together. This movie starts off with Catherine Zeta-Jones' character Kate being completely focused on work and not really having any kind of life outside her kitchen because her restaurant is her life but slowly changes within the first half of the movie when her sister Christine has a wreck and her daughter Zoe is left alive and in Kate's care. At first Kate doesn't know what to do with Zoe and getting to know Zoe's eating habits but with help from Nick, Zoe finally gets to eat some solid food. That brings Nick and Kate closer since they were on the fritz because Nick moved into Kate's kitchen when Kate was taking time off to be with Zoe in her time of need. During the course of the movie, Nick and Kate grow closer and Zoe and Kate also grow closer and Zoe comes to adore Nick. This movie has a good ending but I will say a slow beginning but judging by everything else this movie definitely gets a three and a half out of four stars.
